Information
Welcome to Spiti
Separated
from fertile Lahaul by the soaring 4551m Kunzum Pass, the
trans-Himalayan region of Spiti is another chunk of Tibet marooned
within India, a kind of 'mini-Ladakh' with fewer tourists. The scattered
villages in this serrated moonscape arrive like mirages while the
turquoise-grey ribbon of the Spiti River is your near-constant
companion, albeit sometimes way below in precipitous gorges.
The
whole Spiti–Kinnaur loop is scenically spectacular, attracting hordes
of summer motorcyclists completing one of India's great road trips.
When to go and weather
Jan–Jun & early Sep–Oct Outside the
monsoon season; perfect for trekking and other activities.
Mid-Jul–early Sep the monsoon drenches the
lower-lying areas but Lahaul and Spiti stay dry.
Nov–Apr Good for snow-lovers, but the high
passes to Lahaul and Spiti are blocked.

With its snow laden unexplored higher reaches and slopes, the Park forms a natural habitat for a number of endangered animals including the Snow Leopards and Siberian ibex. Because of the park's high altitude and extreme temperatures, the vegetation density is sparse, consisting mostly of alpine trees and groves of Himalayan cedar (Cedrus deodara).
